Inverclyde Win "Renfrewshire Challenge"

Inverclyde Central defeated Paisley 3.5-0.5 to win the "Renfrewshire Challenge" match on 27th April. The match was played at the St. Mirren Supporters Club, the new home of Paisley Chess Club, where Inverclyde may play their home matches in next season's Glasgow League.

The Inverclyde team heavily outranked their hosts and soon established a 2-0 lead with swift victories for David Logue on board 1, and Alex Fisher, who scored a spectacular early checkmate. The highly unusual final postion is show below:

The remaining games were much closer. In a hard fought game Marc Sherdian was able to exploit his passed pawn on the kingside to grind down his opponent, securing a 3-0 advantage for Inverclyde. In the final game Andy Smith faced a difficult ending - defending with a bishop and knight against a rook and two pawns - but with both players in time trouble held on for a draw.

The match was enjoyed by both teams, and may be repeated next season, possibly with Paisley sending at team to the Loreto Club in Greenock.
