Comfortable win for Inverclyde Central v Phones A

Phones 2-6 Inverclyde Central

Inverclyde Central Chess Club achieved a comfortable win against newly promoted Phones A in their latest game in the Glasgow League. The result, which gives Inverclyde 6 points out of a possible 12 ensures there is now no possiblity of relegation this season.

Inverclyde started as favourites, with significant advantages in grading on boards one, two and eight, with the gradings on the five boards inbetween being close. Despite Inverclyde's grading advantages Phones played well to draw on the board ones and eight, but had no success on board two where Inverclyde's Jim Montgomery won comfortably after his opponent made a mistake to lose a piece.

The result was decided on the middle boards , where Inverclyde needed to secure at least 50% to win the match. This they managed comfortably, winning four out five, with good performances by Stephen Riley and Gary McPheator, a win for David Logue after his opponent missed a tactic in an unbalanced King's Indian game, and a full point for Stephen Doherty when his opponent ran out of time in an even position.

The 6-2 win places Inverclyde in midtable in Division 1 of the Glasgow League, and should give them confidence for difficult tests to come in the remaining games against Shettleston, Giffnock and Polytechnic
