Beardsen were recent Glasgow League champions, but had lost their first two matches of the season, giving Inverclyde some grounds for optimism. However, for this game, unlike the previous two, they had Grandmaster Jaacob Aagard, a former Scottish and British Champion available. As well as having to face a super-strong player on board 1, Aagard's inclusion meant that the rest of the Beardsen team moved down a board, giving each of Inverclyde's players a more difficult opponent. Inverclyde, in contrast, were significantly understrength, with three of their four strongest players unavailable. This led to Bearsden having huge grading advantages - as much as 800 points - on each board. To make matters worse, one of Inverclyde's scheduled players was unable to play, giving Bearsden a 1-0 start.
The disparity in strength told, and despite a few promising positions, Inverclyde were ground to an 8-0 defeat. There were some crumbs of comfort on an otherwise bleak evening: David Faith played well in his first game for the club, but was caught in an unfamiliar line for the French Defence; and Andy Smith pushed a strong opponent hard before losing on time.
Inverclyde now have to pick themselves up for a battle against relegation. They next face Cathcart in the Glasgow League before resuming their successful National League campaign versus Dumfries and Oban.
