PERFECT START FOR INVERCLYDE CENTRAL CHESS CLUB IN NATIONAL LEAGUE .
Inverclyde Central Chess Club marked their debut matches in the Scottish national chess league with two victories .
The Greenock team were pitted against two east coast teams for their first two matches in this six team division 4 league .
The first match , held in Dunfermline on 31st October , was against Civil Service / Bank of Scotland 2 which Inverclyde won 4 - 1 .
It was a closer match than the scoreline suggested . Team captain Marc Sheridan managed to win his game after it whittled down to a king and pawn ending with Sheridan managing to promote his passed pawn one move before his opponent and forcing the victory . This was followed by victories for Stephen Hilton , Jim Mc Granaghan and an unlucky defeat for Andy Smith . However the performance of the match went to Inverclydes Andrew Curran who bamboozled his opponent with a fantastic knight sacrifice which had his opposite number shaking his head in disbelief . A fantastic win for Curran and a great start for Inverclyde.
The second match of the day pitted Inverclyde against the highly fancied Pentland Hills . The first game finished in a draw for captain Sheridan who had to fight back from being down a pawn down after making a mistake in the opening . An unlucky defeat then followed for Stephen Hilton followed by a draw for Andy Smith and a win for Jim Mc Granaghan . The final game saw Andrew Curran take his opponent to the wire with Curran playing the razor sharp Dutch Defence and holding his nerve in severe time trouble to win in style .
Rounds 3 and 4 to be played in the middle of November aginst teams from Ayr and Aberdeen .
