Inverclyde beat Giffnock A

In their penultimate match in the Glasgow Chess League, Inverclyde Central Chess Club faced Giffnock A, a team against whom they have frequently underperfomed in the last few seasons, and whom they lost to 6-2 in last season's fixture.

However, Inverclyde entered the match on high after their recent win against Phones and very creditable draw with title challengers Shettleston. Giffnock's team is slightly weaker this season, and Inverclyde had noticeable advantages in grading on the lower boards. Inverclyde got off to a great start with a remarkable win in only 16 moves for David Logue, with no pieces taken in the game - David's opponent had allowed his position to be cramped by advancing pawns, and resign the game after missing a knight move in the centre which left him a choice of losing his queen and rook or being checkmated!

Jim Montgomery won his match on board two, and now advances to an outstanding 6.5 points out of a possible 8 in the Glasgow League, with a performance rating of 2185, 100 points higher than his current grading. Further wins from Kevin McDonald, Stephen Riley and Gary McPheator secured the victory. John Calder drew his game to take Inverclyde to 5.5, extending the margin of victory, with defeats for Stephen Hilton and Andy Smith.

The excellent result takes Inverclyde to 9 points out of a possible 16 and leaves them comfortably in mid table with one match left. They have a chance to secure a top half finish in the final game, but this will be far from easy against title challengers Polytechnic A
