Inverclyde Central Chess Club slumped to defeat in their second game in the Glasgow League against Glasgow Montrose. After a surprising defeat to Phones in the opening match, this game assumed much greater importance for Inverclyde, with the loser likely to face a struggle to avoid relegation. The teams were fairly evenly matched apart from the top two boards where Inverclyde held a significant grading advantage. Unlike against Phones, Inverclyde were able to field their strongest team, being bolstered by the return of Stephen Doherty and John Calder.
Jim Montgomery and Kevin McDonald duly won on the top two boards, but this was not enough, as Inverclyde collapsed on the other boards, scoring only one point out of a possible six, a very disappointing return given that the grades of their opponents were roughly equal to those of the Inverclyde players.
After their disappointing start to the season Inverclyde next face perennial championship challengers Hamilton A. They will start as underdogs, but will be hopeful of producing a greatly improved performace to create an upset and kickstart their campaign.
