Central Chess Club suffered a heavy defeat at home against Bearsden A in their
final match of the season in the Glasgow Chess League. Inverclyde had had a
difficult season, and had only just avoided relegation by winning their
penultimate match against Polytechnic A. It was fortunate for Inverclyde that
they did not require anything from this match, as their opponents, Bearsden, were
top of the league with a 100% record from their eight games. Furthermore, the
visitors were highly motivated: despite their success, it was still possible
that they could lose the League on board count (the chess equivalent of goal
difference) if they lost the game by four points or more. Bearsden took no
chances, fielding a very strong team, led by International Master Andrew Greet,
on board one. Once the match got going, the destination of the championship was
never in doubt as Bearsden were much too strong for Inverclyde, eventually
winning seven of the eight boards to clinch the title in style. Gary McPheator
spared Inverclyde's blushes to some extent, securing a draw on board 6,
preventing a whitewash.
The
margin of defeat was a disappointment for Inverclyde, but they could take heart
from their relatively good finish – sixth out of ten - in the First Division,
which was surprisingly high, given how close they came to being relegated.
Inverclyde will next face Paisley Chess Club in the annual Renfrewshire
Challenge match before their season finishes at the end of June.
