Inverclyde Central finish season with draw

Inverclyde Central Chess Club finished the Glasgow League season with a creditable draw away to last season’s champions Bearsden. Unusually, Inverclyde could afford to relax somewhat coming into the game, having recently avoided relegation by defeating fellow strugglers East Kilbride. The teams were fairly evenly matched, apart from on the top board, where Inverclyde's Kevin McDonald had the unenviable task of facing International Master Andrew Greet, one of Scotland's strongest players. Inverclyde struck first though, with Andrew Curran cleverly using his queen and minor pieces to exploit weaknesses around his opponent's King which drove his opponent to resign before the inevitable checkmate. The top board went as to Bearsden's International Master, but Inverclyde retook the lead, with Jim Montgomery in board two scoring his seventh win in eight games this season. Bearsden battled back though, winning three of the next four games to finish. With one game remaining, Bearsden were leading 4-3, but David Logue managed to win the last point for Inverclyde, with his opponent missing a trick under time pressure.

The draw means in Inverclyde finish the season in seventh position, with the same points total, but one place lower than last season.
