Stephen Doherty wins crucial championship match

Stephen Doherty won the penultimate match of the 2008-9 Inverclyde Central Club Championship against David Logue at the Loreto Club on Monday 6th April. Standing on 4/4, Logue only needed to draw to clinch the championship, whilst Doherty, on 2.5/3, needed to win to keep his hopes alive.

In a short, sharp Queen's Gambit, Doherty exploited the exposed position of Logue's queen in the centre of the board to force a series of exchanges which left him with a decisive material advantage, causing Logue to resign after 17 moves. The crucial win leaves Doherty standing on 3.5/4, with one game remaining against Alex Fisher.

Doherty can now win the championship outright with a win over Fisher in the final game, though a draw would also give him a share of first place with Logue.

Current Club Championship Standings:

Stephen Doherty 3.5/4
David Logue 4/5
Andy Smith 3.5/5
Alex Fisher 2/5
Marc Sheridan 1/5
Bob Blincow 0/5
