Renfrewshire Challenge 2

Inverclyde Central 4 - 1 Paisley

Inverclyde Central hosted Paisley Chess Club at the Loreto Club in Greenock in the 2nd Renfrewshire Challenge match. The team line-ups had a lopsided nature: Inverclyde were heavily outgraded on the top board, but heavily outgraded their opponents on the remaining four boards. David Logue on board 1 for Inverclyde was very fortunate to beat his strong opponent. Having lost a piece early in the game, Logue managed to keep his position competitive until his opponent overlooked a combination attack which allowed Logue to win his Queen and steal the game. The Paisley team fought well on boards three to five, making Andrew Curran, Marc Sheridan and Alex Fisher work hard for their victories. On board two Andy Smith was edged out by his opponent in a complex endgame to give Paisley a consolation victory. The 4-1 result reflected the strength of the teams, and both could be content with their performance. A return match in Paisley is planned for the end of the season.
